#FCAB04 match reaction
FCA lost 4-1 at home to Bayer 04 Leverkusen despite a bold performance. "After the break we were a lot closer to the equaliser than they were to going 3-1 up," said a frustrated Markus Weinzierl after full time. Full match reaction below.
Rafał Gikiewicz: "We had a great chance in the first minute which we sadly weren’t able to take. Then we scored three goals but ended up 2-1 down at the break. The deciding factor was that we made mistakes. Eight goals conceded in two home games obviously doesn’t look good at all, but we were a lot better today than against Hoffenheim. On the whole we just need to be smarter and cannot concede such easy goals."
Felix Uduokhai: "It was a miserable afternoon for all of us at the club. We felt good today and started the game well. Those goals we conceded were beyond unfortunate. I’m very sorry for the fans who gave us outstanding support again today, our character was on point, but our ambition was lacking in the end. I’m very happy for Flo that he was able to get a goal. For me, as a defender, eight goals in two home games are definitely too many. Now we need to use the international break to look more closely at our game and improve it."
Florian Niederlechner: "This is a really disappointing result, especially because we made life difficult for ourselves with two own goals. We put these setbacks behind us and kept ourselves in the game. We were close to scoring the equaliser and had Leverkusen pegged back, but then we were made to suffer after more mistakes and in the end it was a comprehensive victory for them. We need to use the two weeks off to work on those mistakes."
André Hahn: "I don’t think we played badly. The result looks a lot worse than the game actually was, but we were scoring for them at the back and failing to at the other end. We knew we had the fans behind us and really wanted to give them a win. The two quick own goals were tough to take, but after pulling a goal back we expected big things of ourselves in the second half. We failed to take our chances after that and were not compact enough at the back."
Markus Weinzierl: "It was a disappointing afternoon for us. We passed up a golden opportunity in the first minute and then conceded two own goals – you can’t start any worse than that against a strong side like Leverkusen. Still, we remained focused and committed and pulled a goal back. After the break we were closer to the equaliser than they were to making it 3-1. But we simply cannot allow such easy counterattacks, we need to be smarter. On the whole, it was a bold display against a tough opponent without reward."
Gerardo Seoane: "Hats off to my team for their attitude today. We knew they would make things difficult for us with their direct nature, but we threw ourselves into the challenges from the start and moved the ball forward well. Luck was on our side during a wild first half, then we were able to bring more quality into the game with our substitutions in the second half – that was clear to see."
