Rieder: “We need to learn the right lessons”
Reaction to the defeat against Freiburg
Despite plenty of positives in their performance against SC Freiburg, FC Augsburg were left empty-handed after failing to take their chances and conceding two avoidable goals. Here’s the reaction to the game.
Arijon Ibrahimović: “I actually think we played pretty well, but we just lacked that little bit of luck in front of goal. We had another two or three good chances in the second half in particular. Ultimately, we didn’t defend well enough. We need to keep working hard and improving. A defeat like this is tough to take because we really shouldn’t have let the game slip away from us. We have to do better in Leipzig and stay switched on defensively right until the final whistle.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We actually played well, but we’ve ended up with nothing to show for it, which is really frustrating. We were on top, especially at the start of the second half, but we didn’t manage to put the game to bed. Freiburg didn’t create many chances, but they were ruthless when it mattered. We also didn’t defend their crosses well enough. Of course, the fact that we haven’t won in six games is something we can’t ignore. But we need to keep a level head. We’ll analyse the game, keep working hard and move on.”
Fabian Rieder: “Today’s defeat is incredibly hard to take because we played well for long periods. Freiburg barely created any clear-cut chances, yet they’re leaving with all three points. That’s incredibly frustrating. Of course, we need to take the positives from this game, but we also have to be honest about what went wrong. We’re a young team and you go through spells like this in football. The important thing is that we learn the right lessons and come out of it stronger.”
Manuel Baum: “I really can’t accept that we’ve lost today. We played well for large parts of the game, but football is decided by key moments. We only have ourselves to blame for not scoring a second or even a third goal when we had the chance. What really frustrates me is the way we conceded. We lost our concentration at crucial moments. It’s extremely disappointing that we’ve got nothing to show for what was otherwise a decent performance.”
Julian Schuster: “We needed to make a few adjustments to the way we played. We wanted to get the ball in behind quickly, and we tried to do that right from the start. But we knew how difficult it would be to play in Augsburg, and you could see that when they took the lead. At the start of the second half, it actually looked more likely that FCA would score a second, but our substitutes made the difference and helped us turn the game around."
