Wagner: “A fantastic afternoon all round”
Reaction to the home win over Wolfsburg
Goals from academy graduates Noahkai Banks and Mert Kömür, along with summer signing Robin Fellhauer, saw FC Augsburg record their first home win of the Bundesliga season on matchday 6. Here’s the reaction to the 3-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg.
Noahkai Banks: “It hasn’t really sunk in yet that I was able to help the team with my first Bundesliga goal. We were all highly motivated and knew exactly how important this match was – the coach prepared us really well for it. The quality in this team has always been there, and today we showed it on the pitch. It was such a special afternoon for me – my whole family was here, even my grandma for the first time.”
Finn Dahmen: “The last four games didn’t go the way we wanted. Today we showed incredible intensity and got our reward for it. We’ve got a big squad with lots of quality players, so I wasn’t surprised that things clicked so well. Of course, I was delighted to make that save at the end to help the team see it out.”
Robin Fellhauer: “We played really well and deserved to win. Scoring my first Bundesliga goal on top of that was just perfect – it’s an incredible feeling. The difference compared to the last two games was mainly in our attitude, intensity and work rate. Tactically, there wasn’t a huge change. I’m also really happy for Mert and Noki – they both work so hard every day. They know we believe in them, and we’re proud of them.”
Mert Kömür: “Sandro gave us such a good feeling before the match. After the last few weeks, we knew we had to show something today and play with courage. We’re happy that it worked out and that we proved what we can do. We made it really hard for Wolfsburg right from the start, and to take the lead so early from a corner was ideal. That gave us an extra push, we took control of the game and were able to give ourselves and the fans a deserved home win.”
Sandro Wagner: “We’re obviously very happy with the result – it was a deserved win. We’d set ourselves clear goals and the group has learned a lot over the past few weeks. We wanted to be aggressive without the ball and attack with good structure. We had a lot of flair players out there today, and that’s the kind of football we want to keep playing – it was great fun to watch. On top of that, two academy players got their reward with goals and outstanding performances, which shows the direction we want to go in. Overall, it was a fantastic afternoon all round for us.”
VfL Wolfsburg head coach Paul Simonis: “First of all, congratulations to my colleague – FCA absolutely deserved the win today. That was our worst performance of the season so far. I thought we were on the right path, but today there was only one team on the pitch that truly wanted to win, and that was Augsburg.”
