Vargas: "I always want to play!"

Ruben Vargas sent Augsburg on their way to an important 3-1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach last Friday with his headed goal. In an interview with FCA TV, the Swiss forward spoke about his performance against the Foals, looked ahead to Sunday evening’s clash with SC Freiburg (18:00 CET) and weighed up his chances of being called up to the Switzerland national team.
"It was really nice to start the weekend with three points on Friday night," said Ruben Vargas, reflecting on FCA’s 3-1 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach. A perfect way to start the weekend, indeed, and a happy ending to an otherwise tricky evening for the Augsburg boys: "We struggled to get into the game," the 22-year-old pointed out: "We were lucky not to go behind from the Gladbach penalty."
The Fuggerstädters looked a lot better after the half-time break and showed what they were capable of. "We made really good use of our chances in the second half," said the left-winger. Vargas was brought on after the first 45 minutes and was able to complete a half for the team for the first time in a while: "Obviously I always want to play. When I come off the bench I want to help the team." And help the team he did. His goal in the 52nd minute laid the foundations for a vital Augsburg win. "I’m so happy we won and I was able to help the team with my headed goal," said Vargas. "We trained set-pieces on Friday morning and it was going well then too." In the end, Augsburg needed just the one corner to score the set-piece goal they had worked hard training for.
Vargas: "We’re going to Freiburg to get the three points!"
This weekend, FC Augsburg face SC Freiburg (kick-off: Sunday, 18:00 CET). "It won’t be easy there," warned Vargas: "It will be a hard-fought game with a lot of fifty-fifty challenges. I am sure, however, that if we prepare well we can put on a good show this Sunday." The reverse fixture this season ended 1-1, with Vargas scoring the 80th minute equaliser.
With a win on Sunday, Augsburg (currently 13th place with 29 points) would draw within two points of Freiburg (9th place with 34 points), but Vargas isn’t letting that come into his mind. “We have to concentrate on our own performance and see how it goes game by game. That’s mostly helped us to move forwards and it’s what we will keep on doing.” Vargas is optimistic heading into the game: “We are going to Freiburg to pick up three points. I think we can do it.”
After this match there will be an international break, although the Switzerland squad has yet to be confirmed. Vargas is excited when asked about a potential call-up: “Obviously I’d be delighted to be there and to play for Switzerland.”
