Olympics to begin on 23rd July in Tokyo
Felix Uduokhai and Marco Richte have been called up to Germany's squad for the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games.
Both Felix Uduokhai and Marco Richter have featured for Germany at various age levels. Uduokhai received his first senior call up last autumn, but didn't feature for the side. He and Richter were part of the Germany U21 squad that reached the final of the U21 EUROs in 2019 (2-1 loss to Spain).
"Of course we are happy that both of them will be representing Germany at the Olympics," said FCA sporting director Stefan Reuter. "Felix and Marco are well deserving of this call up, based on their performances last season. The games in Japan will be a great experience for both of them. We are wishing them and Germany all the best, even if it means that they will miss out on pre-season with us. They are welcome to return home with a gold medal in hand, even if they are going to miss our first-round DFB-Pokal game."
"It's an honour for me to be able to represent Germany at the Olympic Games. I'm happy that I'm back to full fitness in time after my injury at the end of last season, and that FCA have agreed to let me participate," said Uduokhai.
"The U21 EUROs two years ago were already a fantastic experience. I'm confident that the Olympics will be another highlight. I'm very pleased to have been called up and that FCA have agreed to let me join up with the team. It would be nice to crown this achivement with a gold medal," said Richter.
Germany will open the tournament with group stage games against Brazil (Thursday, 22nd July, 13:30 CEST), followed by Saudi Arabia (Sunday, 25th July, 13:30 CEST) and Ivory Coast (Wednesday, 28th July, 10:00 CEST). The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals, with the final set to take place on Saturday, 7th August (13:30 CEST) in Yokohama.
