Thorup: “Pick up as many points as possible”

Away in Leverkusen on matchday 30

First Team 24.04.2025, 14:25

FC Augsburg’s penultimate away game of the season will see them travel to Leverkusen, the home of the defending champions, on Saturday, 26th April (15:30 CEST). Head coach Jess Thorup is well aware of the challenge his team will face at the BayArena, but is expecting his side to be up for it.

“In the end, we earned a well-deserved point against a top three side,” Thorup said following the 0-0 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend. “We played extremely well in the first half and all we were missing is a goal. We then let our control over the game slip a little in the second half, which is why we can be satisfied with the result.”

This weekend, his side will face another tough challenge in the form of second-placed Leverkusen. “Of course we will need to prepare ourselves for a tough match, but we can taken plenty of confidence into the game and have proven many times over the last weekend that we’re capable to competing with the big teams.”

A thousand fans expected to travel to Leverkusen

FCA have four games left to play this season, with their trip to Leverkusen followed by a home game against Holstein Kiel (Sunday, 4th May, 15:30 CEST). Their final away game of the season will be in Stuttgart (Sunday, 11th May, 19:30 CEST) before FCA welcome Union Berlin to the WWK ARENA on the final matchday (Saturday, 17th May, 15:30 CEST). Thorup has made no secret about their aims for the end of the season: “We’re focused on what we can do and are taking these ambitions into every game, as we want to pick up as many points as possible.”

The Dane will be without Arne Maier once again this weekend due to a red-card suspension. Centre-back Noahkai Banks will also be unavailable due to a minor muscle injury. Mergim Berisha trained individually on Thursday. “We’re hoping that he will be back on the pitch with the team tomorrow,” Thorup said.

Around 1,000 fans are expected to accompany FCA to Leverkusen.
