Thorup: “We want to get our third consecutive win”

Home game against promoted side Heidenheim

First Team 07.03.2024, 15:00

A home game against 1. FC Heidenheim awaits FC Augsburg on Matchday 25. The newly-promoted side will be the visitors at the WWK ARENA for the first time in the Bundesliga on Saturday (15:30 CET).

It is also a special clash for Jess Thorup as the 54-year-old Dane's first game as FCA head coach came in the return fixture. “It was a great start for the team and me,” recalled Thorup, looking back at the 5-2 away win in which the Fuggerstädter were able to come back from 2-0 down. “We’ve developed really well in the last 17 games, both out of possession, as well as with the ball,” FCA’s head coach explained, displaying his satisfaction.

FCA registered a record-breaking 6-0 in Darmstadt last time out, with the Fuggerstädter already 5-0 up after 29 minutes. “The game in Darmstadt was fantastic – not only in terms of the result, but also in terms of the manner we achieved it. We can take lots of positive things with us,” said Thorup. The Dane now wants to follow it up in front of a home crowd: “We’re focused on the next game – we want to get our third consecutive win!”

A clash between close rivals in the table

Despite the clear target – FCA most recently managed three wins in a row in autumn 2022 – they have a lot of respect for 1. FC Heidenheim. Frank Schmidt’s side are only one point and one place behind FCA, who are tenth with 29 points. “Heidenheim have had an outstanding season as a newly-promoted side so far and they are especially dangerous from set pieces and in transition – we need to be ready for that,” Thorup warned.

Whilst Mads Pedersen has one game of his suspension left to serve, Patric Pfeiffer is set to miss out due to injury. The defender should return to team training next week. Aside from that, the Fuggerstädter could have almost a full squad available. The game is set to take place in front of a great crowd once again as the chances are that the few remaining tickets for the clash will be purchased ahead of Saturday afternoon.
