Thorup: "End the season on a high"
FCA travel to face Stuttgart
FC Augsburg round out matchday 33 of the Bundesliga season at VfB Stuttgart on Sunday evening (kick-off 19:30 CEST). The Fuggerstädter will be looking to earn a positive result in their final away fixture of the campaign.
Hopes of a win at home last time out did not come to fruition as, despite multiple chances for FCA, it was Holstein Kiel who emerged with a 3-1 victory. “We have analysed the game and put it behind us,” reported head coach Jess Thorup. Focus now lies on the final two fixtures this term: “We want to end the season on a high by finishing in the best league position possible,” explained the Dane.
The fixture in Stuttgart will mark already the third time that these sides have faced off in 2025 and FCA want to set the record straight after falling to a 1-0 defeat in each of the previous meetings, in both the league and cup. “We lost both meetings this year so now it’s time to shift the tide. If we perform well then we are capable of earning something away from home and that is our aim.”
Not much to separate the sides
The Fuggerstädter currently sit 11th in the Bundesliga standings and just a solitary point behind Stuttgart, who occupy 10th spot and have a DFB-Pokal final to look forward to. One peculiarity of this match-up is that despite VfB having lost each of their last six matches at home, they are unbeaten in seven straight fixtures with FCA. “In order to pick up points in Stuttgart, we need to do the basics right,” analysed Thorup. “That does not just apply to our defensive work but also in possession.”
Mergim Berisha remains unavailable to Augsburg for Sunday’s contest while he continues to work on his comeback from a muscle injury. For that reason, Noahkai Banks has been training with the first team once again and could pose an option for the squad. 2,000 travelling fans are set to support the side in Stuttgart.
