Behrens: “Showed that we always believe in ourselves as a team”

Match reaction following 2-2 draw against Leverkusen

First Team 12.09.2026, 18:50

FC Augsburg extended their unbeaten run to three straight Bundesliga games after a 2-2 draw against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The hosts nearly held on for all three points, before conceding a late equaliser. Read on for all the post-match reaction to the result.

Hennes Behrens: “It was an incredibly intense game, and we had to get stuck in to every challenge. Our performance would have been worthy of all three points. It’s extremely frustrating to have given up the lead right at the end. Nevertheless, we once again showed that we have what it takes to come back after trailing and that we always believe in ourselves as a team.”

Finn Dahmen: “From the start, we knew that it would be a tough game. Nevertheless, I think that we did well for much of the match. At half-time, we made a few minor adjustments and we came out of the break looking strong. When you’ve got the lead for that long, then you naturally want to finish by winning the game. On the other hand, Leverkusen are a team with a lot of quality and it’s true that you maybe don’t take as many risks in attack when you’re trying to defend a lead, as we saw today.”

Michael Gregoritsch: “We knew that we weren’t good enough at times in the first half. What mattered was that we continued to keep at it. It obviously hurts to concede an equaliser right at the end, but we made sure to get stuck in to every challenge. Leverkusen are a really good team and they managed to get us under control at the end. I’m obviously very proud to now be the club’s all-time record goalscorer in the Bundesliga. I’ve enjoyed many positive moments here, which makes this a very special milestone for me. I knew of my position in this ranking heading into the game, but my focus is always on helping the team.”

Manuel Baum (FC Augsburg head coach): “After the full-time whistle, I high-fived my players and saw that they all looked disappointed. The fact that they felt that way after drawing 2-2 against a side like Leverkusen is a mindset that I’m very pleased to see, as a coach. Overall, I’m satisfied with the performance and the result, even if we’re obviously frustrated to have conceded late on. The team proved their quality in the second half in particularly, and showed that we never give up.”

Carles Martínez (Bayer 04 Leverkusen head coach): “The game made for excellent entertainment for the fans, with plenty of chances at both ends. Congratulations to Augsburg on their strong start to the season – it’s extremely difficult to pick up points here. The first half belonged to us, before Augsburg then put us under pressure in the second. We were able to create chances, but didn’t finish them, which isn’t good enough. Nevertheless, we were able to reset after conceding twice and worked hard to score an equaliser. In the end, it was a deserved draw.”
