Thorup: “A great game for the fans”

Reaction to the 1-1 draw against Dortmund

FC Augsburg fought hard to earn a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund at a sold-out WWK-Arena on matchday 15. Here is the post-match reaction.

Ermedin Demirović: “We played well for the whole 90 minutes today. We wanted to give all the fans in the stadium an early Christmas present and managed that with the point. It was a really open game and there were lots of chances for both sides. A draw is a fair result in the end, even though it felt like we could have won after creating so many opportunities against a top team.”

Finn Dahmen: “I think it was a shame that we didn’t make it 2-1 at the end. The game could have gone both ways, but we’re ultimately satisfied with the point. Dortmund are a strong side. We defended with real passion, particularly late on, and were dangerous in the final third too. We’re pleased to have regained the stability we had from the matches prior to the Bremen defeat. We’ll now travel to Stuttgart full of confidence and will put in another committed performance there.”

Niklas Dorsch: “It was an exciting game with lots of chances for both teams. We even had opportunities to win it during injury time. Nevertheless, we can be proud of ourselves for constantly testing out the defence of a great side, that’s not easy to do. A draw is a fair result – we were lacking the accuracy in the final third we needed for a win. I’m pleased that we sent out the right message after the defeat in Bremen.”

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “The point is fair for both sides – we each could have won the game. There was space for both teams, chances for both and therefore a draw was a fair result. I’d say directly after the game that we could have won it, but tomorrow I’ll be happy with the point.”

Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg head coach): “I said before the game: Let’s see where we stand. It was a great match for the fans, both teams could have won. We were right in the game until the final second and could have secured all three points with a bit of luck. Dortmund had their chances and constantly put us under pressure, but we dealt with that and kept creating opportunities for ourselves."

Edin Terzic (Borussia Dortmund head coach): “It was a wild game with an unsatisfactory result from our point of view. We gave our all and had a number of chances which we failed to take. It ultimately finished 1-1 against a brave, intense and aggressive Augsburg side. We were close to finding a winning goal, but I have to admit that Augsburg also had good chances at the start of the second half in particular.”
