Schmidt: "We couldn't find the final pass today"

First Team 28.09.2019, 16:58
FC Augsburg remain without a win against Bayer Leverkusen. In the 17th meeting between the two teams, FCA  once again leaves the pitch empty-handed. “We put lots of pressure on them after the break, but an unlucky goal didn’t help us,” Martin Schmidt summed up after the match. You can read all the post-match reactions below.  Stephan Lichtsteiner:  “I think that we played really well for 75 minutes, but the second goal really knocked the wind out of our sails. The first two goals were unlucky, but we have to take our chances to score. We have to be even more clinical – if we’re able to do so then I’m confident our upcoming games will go our way.” Florian Niederlechner:  “In the last few weeks I was the goalscorer, now I just feel like an idiot. The first goal was bizarre, especially because we had denied the opponent any clear chances up to that point. But, you have to admit that we played very well today against a team that boasts players with exceptional individual quality.” Reece Oxford:  “We wanted to stick to our match plan in the first half and I think that we managed to do that quite well. At the end of the day though, I think that the better team won because Leverkusen have a lot of pace and always make things difficult for us.” Alfred Finnbogason:  “It’s like Leverkusen are our bogey team. Now we need to make a fresh start when we face them in the second half of the season, if we want to finally beat them. But you have to admit that Bayer 04 are a really strong team. What matters now is that we need to keep our heads held high, work hard in training and then do better against Gladbach.” Tin Jedvaj: “Leverkusen are very strong in possession and create a lot of good chances. We managed to allow them very few opportunities to score. The manner in which the first two goals went in was not good, but Leverkusen are one of those teams that can punish any small mistake, which we saw again today. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to take our chances in the end.” Martin Schmidt: “We wanted to be brave and press forward, but the final ball forward was lacking today. We have given a good account of ourselves against a very good opponent but went behind through a stupid own goal. After the break, we had another spell of pressure, and also a good chance through Julian Schieber, but the own goal was really the first nail in the coffin today.” Peter Bosz: “We are very happy with the game and with the result. Augsburg were the first team this season that put us under pressure early on, which we were not expecting and so we had our problems with it in the beginning. But we dealt with the issue well enough and managed to get the three points and three goals from the few chances we managed. That is why I’m pleased.”
