Schmidt: "We fought for a point until the last second"

First Team 02.09.2019, 10:34
FCA were down to ten men for almost an hour against Werder Bremen and ultimately fell to a 3-2 defeat. “We fought for a point until the last second,” Martin Schmidt said, content at least with the performance in the second half. You can read the full match reactions below. Felix Uduokhai: “Unfortunately, we made it too easy for Bremen, especially for their first two goals. Our link-up play in some areas wasn’t as good today. We will work on that for the next two weeks and hopefully we’ll pick up our first win of the season soon. It gives me confidence that despite being a man down for most of the game we managed to equalise twice. It’s a shame that we were unable to get anything in the end.” Ruben Vargas: “We are disappointed with the result because despite the red card, we kept working and didn’t lose faith in getting something from the game. It’s hard when you’re outnumbered for most of the match, but we actually performed pretty well. Of course, I’m happy about scoring my first brace, but the success of the team is my main concern, not my own performances.” Alfred Finnbogason: “After so many new signings, we have realised that we still need a bit more time. We have the chance to work on our chemistry in the international break. But we can take a lot of positives from the game, because we dominated for the last 20 minutes despite being a man down, which gives us confidence.” Martin Schmidt: “We fought for a point until the last second, and no one would’ve expected that after the first half hour. The performance in the second half was good, with a bit of luck we could’ve scored in the closing stages. We didn’t defend well in the first half, we went behind twice, but we came back twice. Despite this, we know that we are on the right track, we created chances and now we need to work on defending our goal. If we do that, I think that we can get three points soon. We will take courage and a strong mentality from this game, but also critically analyse our mistakes.” Florian Kohfeldt: ”We should have put the game to bed in the first half with a two goal lead. After they equalised to make it 2-2 we remained calm and created many chances. When we took the lead, Augsburg pushed us deep into our own half, so I must compliment them on how they pressured us so intensely. But my lads dealt well with that so I’m very happy, and it’s very important that we were able to take these three points.”
