Schmidt: "Sometimes we just need that spark"

First Team 28.11.2019, 17:31

November has so far been a very successful month for FC Augsburg. The first away win in Paderborn (1-0) was followed by a good friendly performance and then a huge home win last Sunday (4.0 against Hertha Berlin). On Saturday, 28th November, (15:30 CET) , Martin Schmidt’s side will want to continue their good run of form against FC Köln and pick up their third league win in a row.

After a difficult start to the season, FCA has undoubtedly been on an upward trajectory since mid-October, talking eight points from their last five games. FCA head coach Martin Schmidt confirmed this impression. “You can now see the great potential of the team. We are strong in defence, and now that we score goals we are strong in attack too. I like this athletic and courageous football that we’re playing.” He is not alone, as the players also reported positive feedback and had taken in the “vertical thinking.”

This applies to the entire squad, as through Andre Hahn, Sergio Cordova and Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, FCA showed that three players can come into the squad and immediately turn in top performances. Since Schmidt can put together his squad for Saturday with access to all players except the long-term injuries, there is the chance of having “that spark. But that is what is needed in every team, and we can generate a positive reaction in the team,” said the Swiss.

New coach, with a special atmosphere
The next big game against second-bottom side Köln is on Saturday. Apart from the managerial change from Achim Beierlorzer to Markus Gisdol - always a “special occasion” according to Schmidt – the impressive atmosphere of RheinEnergieStadion. Some players haven’t experienced this atmosphere yet. But we are mentally well prepared for Saturday and we will take on this challenge as well.
