Schmidt: "A few things didn't work for us today"

First Team 10.08.2019, 22:10
FC Augsburg have been knocked out in the first round of the DFB-Pokal for the third time in five years. “We still have a lot of work ahead of us“, said Martin Schmidt in his post-match interview. You can read more thoughts on the game here.
Daniel Baier: “We didn’t manage to control the game for 90 minutes today. Getting knocked out by a fourth-tier team shows that we didn’t do much right. On the other hand, Verl played well and to be honest they didn’t win undeservedly. Above all, we failed to create enough chances in the second half. It was a knock out game and the Pokal is now already over for us.” André Hahn: “We were completely asleep for the first 20 minutes and fell two goals behind. Before half time we had two massive chances to get back into the game and turn it around but we weren’t clinical enough to take these chances. Verl played the game of their lives. We have to learn our lessons from the game.” Martin Schmidt: “We knew exactly what was coming for us this match. It was going to be a real Pokal scrap. However, in the opening stages we failed to deal with what we had addressed before the game. We were asleep for the first twenty minutes. Nevertheless, we came back with chances before half time. I think you could see today that a few things weren’t working for us so we know that there’s a lot of work ahead of us in the coming weeks. Congratulations to Verl for a great performance.” Guerino Capretti: “I told the team before the game that we were going to have to work very hard, that it was going to hurt, and that we would have to go to our limits. I am incredibly proud of what we did today.”
