November: FCA continue unbeaten streak

Review of the year 2023

First Team 01.01.2024, 09:07

Another year is coming to an end: 365 days of both highs and lows, but above all a host of memorable moments for FC Augsburg. It’s time once more to reflect on the past twelve months. In part eleven of FCA’s review of the year, we look back on November.

FC Augsburg were in action away in Cologne on matchday 10. Thorup’s side initially went behind again, but Phillip Tietz equalised with his third goal in three games and secured a 1-1 draw for FCA (25’). It was Jess Thorup’s first draw in charge of FC Augsburg following two back-to-back wins.

Before FCA took on TSG Hoffenheim, those in charge of the club filled the assistant coach vacancy. Jacob Friis joined the existing coach set-up with immediate effect, with the Dane signing a contract until 30th June 2025.

Remaining unbeaten under Thorup

FCA secured another 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim, with captain Ermedin Demirović producing a wonderful equaliser in the 53rd minute. That meant that the Fuggerstädter still remained unbeaten under head coach Jess Thorup.

Subsequently, it was time for the next international break, which FCA made use of with a friendly against Jahn Regensburg (5-2 win). In the meantime, the Switzerland national team, including Ruben Vargas, secured their place at the 2024 European Championships in Germany. The 25-year-old FCA player scored in the 1-1 draw against Kosovo as well as giving his side the lead with a header in a 1-1 draw with Israel three days earlier.

FC Augsburg were back in league action as they made the trip to Union Berlin. Despite leading for much of the game (Demirović), FCA were pegged back when Union equalised two minutes before the full-time whistle. Consequently, the Fuggerstädter took a point back with them to Augsburg, which was probably a fair result based on their performance, whilst they also extended their unbeaten streak under Thorup.

A contemporary witness discussion with Abba Naor

A moving discussion took place at the LEW BusinessClub at the WWK ARENA. Contemporary witness Abba Naor gave an approximately one-and-a-half-hour talk about his terrible experiences during the Nazi period in front of over 400 guests. The contemporary witness discussion was organised in accordance with the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. This co-operation is a central component of FCA’s commitment to remembrance, which is aimed at creating a vibrant culture of remembrance.
