4-1 victory in front of 2,817 fans
FC Augsburg played their second pre-season friendly on Wednesday evening, travelling to the Allgäu to face newly promoted Regionalliga side FC Memmingen. The Fuggerstädter ran out 4-1 winners, helped by a Steve Mounié hat-trick.
After making a winning start to pre-season in Gersthofen, FCA head coach Sandro Wagner rested several regulars, with the next friendly already scheduled for Saturday in Lustenau. That gave the likes of Cédric Zesiger, Steve Mounié and Mads Pedersen their first minutes of pre-season. Goalkeeper Nediljko Labrović started between the posts and also wore the captain’s armband.
In front of 2,817 spectators and wearing their eye-catching, red away “Schwabia Kit”, Augsburg posed an early threat in the air, and the opening goal came in the 17th minute: Henri Koudossou delivered a pinpoint cross, which Mounié headed expertly into the bottom-right corner, wrong-footing the goalkeeper. The hosts responded quickly, however – just four minutes later, Luis Vetter equalised following a long ball, although the goal may have come from a marginally offside position (21').
The lead was restored on the half-hour mark. Aiman Dardari was brought down in the box, and Mounié stepped up to convert the resulting penalty with power, completing his brace. The Benin international almost had a third soon after, heading against the underside of the bar in the 34th minute, with the ball bouncing back into play.
Wagner made five substitutions at half time. Mounié remained in the thick of the action and completed his hat-trick just three minutes after the restart, heading home a cross from Dardari to make it 3-1 (48'). FCA’s fourth came from the spot once more: after Mauro Hämmerle was fouled in the box, Arne Maier stepped up and slotted the penalty into the bottom-left corner.
A number of further changes followed, including the introduction of new signing Han-Noah Massengo. The 24-year-old midfielder nearly scored on his debut, but his first attempt was cleared off the line by a defender (66'). There were no major changes to the flow of the game in the closing stages, and the Fuggerstädter saw out a comfortable win in their latest pre-season outing.
