Maaßen: "Proud of how we performed“

Post-match reaction to the second-round defeat against Bayern.

FC Augsburg were knocked out of the DFB-Pokal following a 5-2 defeat against FC Bayern München. Head coach Enrico Maaßen was nevertheless full of praise for his side. Read on for all the post-match reaction from the WWK-Arena.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw:
"We started well and didn’t give up, even after conceding twice. We then came back from 3-1 down as well. I think that both we and the fans can be satisfied with our performance tonight, even if it wasn’t enough to advance to the next round. I think that Bayern don’t enjoy coming here, which you could see tonight again.”

Florian Niederlechner: "We were missing a little bit of luck tonight, which we had during our last wins at home against Bayern. They are a really good team, which they proved once again tonight. But, you could see that we have our own style and it’s really fun to play with this team. We will build on this!”

Mads Pedersen: "You can’t just control the game for the full 90 minutes against Bayern – if your attention lapses for even a second, then they are able to take advantage straight away. We wanted to play the way we did in the Bundesliga recently, which we did quite well at the beginning. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to beat Bayern tonight.”

Lukas Petkov: "The coach told us to be brave, press hard and look to attack. We wanted to score, which you could see in how we performed. Bayern also displayed the quality they have at their disposal tonight. We will take the positives from this game in order to be able to take points off Leipzig on Saturday.”

Julian Nagelsmann: "I think that ultimately we deserved our win. We didn't start the game very well, the first ten minutes were not good at all. Augsburg had the same brave approach as the Bundesliga game, which I in fact like. It's not easy to have to play against that. We rightfully went behind, but then we were raised our game on the pitch and had five big chances, but unfortunately only scored one of them. At half-time, we cleared up a few things and the first 20 minutes after half-time were absolutely brilliant from us, that's where we defeated our opponent. Augsburg did make it 3-2, and that made it tense again, but ultimately it was a deserved victory - although it is not easy to come here and win."

Enrico Maaßen: "Congratulations to Bayern on their win. Of course they have a great team, and you can't answer absolutely everything they do. The way we played from the beginning was fantastic, so full compliments to the whole team. That's what the fans go to the ground to see, that was an advert for football. We took plenty of risks. We didn't help ourselves with the first three we conceded, but after going 3-1 down we kept our morale and mentality high. The decisive moment was that we didn't take a good opportunity to make it 3-3 and then let in the goal to make it 4-2. But I'm proud of the way we presented ourselves out there today."
