Maaßen: “A very frustrating defeat”

Reaction after the 2-0 loss in Freiburg

On Sunday evening, FC Augsburg succumbed to a 2-0 defeat away at SC Freiburg. After the game, the players and head coach were frustrated, especially with how they conceded the two goals.

Ermedin Demirović: “The defeat hurts, especially just after the game. To have given away a penalty so early on is really annoying, and once again we had to chase the game from behind. Overall, both were poor goals to concede, in ways that we have spoken about before. Nevertheless, we had the chances to get back in the game. I personally also had to score. We have to now look at the game, get cleverer and then reward ourselves with points once again.”

Phillip Tietz: “We went into challenges well, but conceded two absolutely avoidable goals. We had already given away a penalty after two minutes and in the second half, we didn’t defend a set piece well, I also take some responsibility for that. Upfront. We could have held onto some balls better or won the second balls. Also, with the chance I had I had to be more clinical. There are things to work on.”

Elvis Rexhbecaj: "When you concede in Freiburg from their first attack, then it’s going to be difficult. Still, we pulled ourselves together after that and tried everything and had the opportunity almost immediately to get the equaliser. In the second half, we then conceded another goal from a set piece, which you can’t allow to happen against Freiburg, because they are very dangerous from set pieces. We weren’t alert enough and ultimately we have to look at ourselves.”

Enrico Maaßen (FC Augsburg head coach): “The defeat is very, very frustrating because both teams were at the same level today. The game was very untidy from both sides, there were a lot of situations where we could have created good goal-scoring opportunities. Defensively, we were solid, which is something that we have focussed on. At the end of the day, two individual errors have decided the game and we have once again been ruthlessly punished. The morale was good, but when you want to take something away from here, you have to avoid errors and be more efficient upfront.”

Christian Streich (SC Freiburg head coach): “We are happy to have won today but obviously want to play better football. We also had too many errors in our game, it’s not easy for us to find solutions on the pitch at the moment. We have to keep rebuilding because of injuries, so we have a lot of players not playing in their best positions, but we fought well today and defended well. The win was extremely important and that can give the team strength, especially just before the away game against Bayern.”
