A tough defeat in Sinsheim

Reaction to the 1-0 loss against Hoffenheim

First Team 27.08.2022, 18:48

FC Augsburg suffered a 1-0 defeat away at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, with Dennis Geiger netting the winner in the first half. Read on for all the post-match reaction from both camps.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We wanted to press high and attack early. Hoffenheim didn’t have many chances in the first half, and we had a foot in the game. In the end, it came down to the details. We had a throw-in high up the pitch, and then Hoffenheim managed to score on the resulting counterattack. We then tried to create chances for ourselves, but struggled in the final third. I’d like to thank the many fans that travelled here today, because we could really feel their support out on the pitch. That’s what helped up fight right until the end, which the fans appreciated. Now, we really want to win our next home game.”

Elvis Rexhbecaj: “It’s a tough result for us. We started well, but lacked conviction in our actions. We wanted to get in front of goal quickly, but should have been more accurate with our passes in order to create more clear-cut chances. Our challenges needed to be better in order to prevent them from scoring. However, Hoffenheim are also a strong team, and it’s impossible to defend against everything they throw your way.”

Maximilian Bauer: “It’s a tough defeat to take. We weren’t alert enough when it came to winning the second ball in the opening half, and with a bit of luck and hard work, a draw would have been possible. We are still at the start of our journey, with a new coach and several new players. We know what we’re capable of and are working hard every week. Now, it’s about bringing it to the pitch as well.”

Enrico Maaßen (head coach, FCA): "It was a tight game, and the stats reflect that. Hoffenheim created better quality chances and therefore deserved their win. We had plenty of good moments of our own, but simply lost the ball too many times in the last half an hour. In addition, we weren't very focused going forwards and left ourselves exposed on the counter. We've got to be more determined in that respect. We will keep positive, identify the steps we need to take, and put them into place going forward to win matches."

André Breitenreiter (head coach, TSG): "It was a well-earned win in my eyes and as expected a difficult game – a game where mentality is key because we know that this sets Augsburg apart. It is important to assert yourself in one-on-one situations and to win your tackles. We didn’t give away any clear-cut chances apart from a corner that passed through our penalty area. I would have liked us to have scored a second in order to guarantee the win."
