Keitel: “It wasn’t a convincing win, but we’re delighted to be through”
Reaction to the win at Sonnenhof Großaspach
FC Augsburg booked their place in the DFB-Pokal round of 16 with a 4-2 victory away to SG Sonnenhof Großaspach. We gathered all the post-match reaction.
Rodrigo Ribeiro: “Cup games are always tricky. I think we played well overall. Obviously, conceding the equaliser at 2-2 wasn’t ideal, but we kept fighting and got the win in the end. Our opponents were desperate to win this game and showed that they have plenty of quality. That makes me even happier with the result and the fact that we’re through to the next round.”
Fabian Rieder: “We knew that we’d be playing on a difficult pitch against highly motivated opponents. We deserved to win in the end and could have scored even more goals. It was a step in the right direction. We showed character, and the support from the sidelines was fantastic too – that gave us another boost. Anything can happen in the cup, but we rose to the challenge and stepped things up again after they equalised. I think we showed great fighting spirit overall.”
Arijon Ibrahimović: “It was a tough game and Großaspach played really well. The important thing was that we kept our composure. The substitutions gave us a fresh injection of energy. Obviously, I’m delighted with my goal. My mum’s getting the Man of the Match trophy.”
Yannik Keitel: “It wasn’t a convincing win, but we kept our heads despite conceding almost immediately after going 2-0 up and then letting them equalise early in the second half. We stayed calm, kept playing our football and got better as the game went on. We’re delighted to be through to the next round and to keep our cup run going.”
Finn Dahmen: “Großaspach played really well. They were brave and tried to play good football. It was a tough cup battle under the floodlights. Looking back, we were a bit naive in certain situations, which was frustrating. But we managed to turn things around after conceding and went on to put in a really good cup performance. We’re only a few wins away from Berlin now. That’s the dream, and we believe we can make it happen.”
FC Augsburg head coach Manuel Baum: “It was just as difficult as we expected. The frustrating thing was the way we conceded after going 2-0 up. We were far too careless defensively, and suddenly it was 2-2 shortly after half time. We picked ourselves up after that and started playing better football again. Credit to my players for the way they dealt with that situation. It’s not something you can take for granted. Ari’s goal was the turning point. We had to defend extremely well and stay alert throughout. We also had plenty of quality to bring on from the bench. We’re really pleased to be through to the next round. Every win gives you confidence.”
SG Sonnenhof Großaspach head coach Pascal Reinhardt: “Congratulations to FC Augsburg on reaching the next round. We fell behind and made it far too easy for them to score their second. But after that, my players put in a really strong performance, especially considering the criticism they faced after losing 7-1 at the weekend. They got the crowd behind them and made a real game of it. That’s no mean feat against a Bundesliga side with so much quality and such a strong counter-attacking game. Ultimately, the substitutions made the difference. After that, our belief started to fade a little and it became difficult to find a way back. But we can still hold our heads high because we made life very difficult for a Bundesliga side.”
