Kade: “We wanted more than just a point”

The reactions to the draw against Frankfurt

FC Augsburg narrowly missed out on victory in their 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt, but secured Bundesliga survival and with it a 16th consecutive season in Germany’s top flight. Here’s the reaction after the match.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “The main feeling right now is disappointment. We did everything we could and even played a bit recklessly towards the end because we were desperate to come away with the win. Securing survival now is not something to be taken for granted, especially when you look at the clubs behind us. A 16th straight year in the Bundesliga is proof of the positive development of our team and the club as a whole.”

Finn Dahmen: “We’re happy to have secured survival, but of course, we really wanted to win today. Before the winter break, we set ourselves certain goals and now we’ve achieved them. Of course, I’m hoping to go to the World Cup, but in the end the national team coach makes the decision. I feel good, I’m in good form and they know what I can offer.”

Anton Kade: “We’re disappointed we didn’t win, but we’re still happy to have secured survival. Our reaction after the final whistle shows that we wanted more than just a point. For my goal, I had to react very quickly and just threw myself at it. Given how the game went, we’re frustrated that we didn’t win today.”

Fabian Rieder: “We played a really good game, especially in the first half. It opened up a bit more in the second, even though we still had our chances. If we had been more efficient in our finishing, we would have come away with the win today. Frankfurt have a lot of quality and they showed it with their goal. That’s why it’s disappointing not to have taken all three points. But it was another step in the right direction.”

Manuel Baum: “It was a great game for everyone in the stadium. We defended well, but Frankfurt showed their individual quality in their one-on-ones. We missed a lot going forwards today – not just big chances, but also passes and we made the wrong decision on a number of occasions. The disappointment after the game shows how hungry the boys are for more. Securing our place in the league was our first priority, though.”

Albert Riera: “We came here to win and get three important points. We weren’t at our best in the first half, but we tried a lot harder in the second and looked to swing the match in our favour. We wanted to control our opponents’ counter-attacks because they are very dangerous in those situations. You have to find the right balance. In the end, we’ll take a point. Next week, we want to get all three points at home.”
