The year 2019 is coming to an end – a good time to take a look at twelve exciting and emotional months full of ups and downs. Looking back at June and July: Lots of new faces at FCA as preseason training began, while two players faced off at the U21 EUROS in Italy and San Marino.
A gruelling season came to an end for the FCA players and while they headed off on their holidays, Managing Director Stefan Reuter and his management team pushed ahead with plans for the coming season. Several promising youngsters joined the club as FCA signed Ruben Vargas from Luzern, Noah Sarenren Bazee from Hannover, Iago from Porto Alegrense and Mads Pedersen from Nordsjaelland. The signings of Carlos Gruezo from Dallas and Marek Suchý from Basel added considerable experience to the squad.
For Marco Richter and Kevin Danso, however, the season was far from over as both travelled to the U21 European Championship in Italy and San Marino with their countries. For Richter and the Germany U21s, the tournament got off to an exceptional start: The FCA boy bagged three goals from the opening two group games. In the third and final group game, Richter came up against FCA teammate Kevin Danso and Austria’s U21s. The Augsburg centre-back equalised from the penalty spot to make it the final score 1-1.
While Danso and Austria were eliminated in the group stage, Richter and Germany marched on to the final, where Stefan Kuntz’s side lost 2-1 to Spain at the final hurdle.
Back in Augsburg, the rest of the squad began preparations for the season ahead. Head coach Martin Schmidt led the players to their training camp in Tyrol and laid the foundations for what everyone hoped would be a successful campaign. The two friendly results during the training camp revealed very little about the team’s form as they beat Galatasaray 4-1 before losing 6-2 to Villarreal.
