January: Two bad results begin rough start to New Year

Club 24.12.2019, 11:59

The year 2019 is coming to an end - a good time to take a look at twelve exciting and emotional months full of ups and downs. Looking back at January: two bitter losses, a bad injury and a change of coach in the U23s.

After only 15 points from the first half of the season and sitting in 15th place, the situation during the winter break is tense for FCA: only one place separates Augsburg from the relegation zone. In the training camp in Alicante, the red-green-whites prepare for the upcoming relegation battle in the second half of the season. Also in Spain is goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who was loaned from TSG Hoffenheim until the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Josef Steinberger is introduced as the new U23s coach. He succeeds Alexander Frankenberger, who temporarily looked after the team after Dominik Reinhardt's resignation.

Late own goal against Düsseldorf – Framberger injures his ACL

The start of the professional season goes awry: FCA lose 2-1 against Fortuna Düsseldorf. Jonathan Schmid equalises the with a direct free kick, but shortly before the end Fortuna score a second time and thus ensures more woe in the WWK ARENA. "We have lost a game that we never should have lost,"  says coach Manuel Baum. FCA not only lose the game, but also Raphael Framberger: The right-back tore his cruciate ligament in the game against Düsseldorf for the second time in his career and was out for the following months.

FCA remain without points in the second game of the year. At Borussia Mönchengladbach Augsburg keep the score 0-0 for a long time thanks to goalkeeper Kobel and a bit of luck, but in the final stages the Foals score twice and win 2-0. Despite  the start to the second half of the season, FCA signed former goalkeeper Jens Lehmann as a new assistant coach. Martin Hinteregger is meanwhile transferred to Eintracht Frankfurt, and Reece Oxford came in from West Ham United.
