Jakić: “A clear indicator of our self-confidence”

Reaction to the away victory against VfL Wolfsburg

After coming out on top against VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday afternoon, FC Augsburg won their fourth game on the trot, a club record which hasn’t been beat since 2014. Here’s the reaction to the victory.

Kristijan Jakić: “If we were just thinking about the first half, we wouldn’t have deserved the win. We were fortunate to have equalised just prior to the break. We upped our game after play resumed and delivered a strong performance, which allowed us to pick up all three points. We’re happy to have won our fourth game on the trot, as it’s a clear indicator of the self confidence we have as a team. After the international break, we’ll up it to five with a victory over Köln. Of course, I’m also thrilled to have scored two Bundesliga goals in one game for the first time in my career. That was the icing on the cake for me today.”

Arne Maier: “Firstly, I want to say well done to the whole team. Four wins in a row, that’s something that we should be proud of and continue to build on. Nevertheless, the win was certainly hard-fought, as we didn’t perform well before the break. The game was turned on its head they were given their red card and we equalised just before half time, which provided us with a new lease of life. We handled the numerical advantage well, and I’m obviously thrilled that my goal contributed towards the win. However, coming away with all three points as a team is obviously the highlight from today.”

Kevin Mbabu: “We were put under pressure before the break and didn’t perform well, but got back into the game after equalising on the back of their red card. We were then able to control the second half with the numerical advantage. Winning four games on the trot is outstanding, and we should aim to continue this success streak for as long as possible.”

Head coach Jess Thorup: “I’m thrilled to bring home three points once again. However, I wasn’t pleased with how we performed in the first half. Wolfsburg were the better team and had the opportunity to extend their lead even further. At half time, I told the boys that it’s not easy to play against ten men, but it did provide us with the opportunity to turn the tide in our favour, which we managed to do. We scored some great goals and hardly let anything through at the back.”

Niko Kovač (Wolfsburg head coach): “We’re disappointed with today’s result. We did everything we set out to do in the first half, but the red card then threw us a curve ball. Having a player sent off then conceding a goal straight after is a direct reflection of our entire season so far. Nevertheless, congratulations to Augsburg on the win.”
