Herrlich: "We scored two great goals"

Hoffenheim match reaction

First Team 03.04.2021, 19:04

FCA took a huge step towards Bundesliga safety with their 2-1 win over Hoffenheim on Saturday afternoon. “I think our first-half performance was very good,” analysed head coach Heiko Herrlich after the match. We round up all the reaction.

André Hahn: It was an incredibly important win as it takes us above Hoffenheim and also ended our run of defeats against them at home. The coach talked about how high their defensive line would be in our analysis and we wanted to make the most of that space – something we did for both of our goals. Things are going well for me at the moment. It was a great ball from Ruben and I hit it with confidence. We won’t rest on our laurels now though; we want to kick on against Schalke.

Marco Richter: The three points are crucial, not just in terms of the table, but also for our confidence. We’re over the moon with the win, and I think we deserved it. We’ve new leapfrogged Hoffenheim and have increased the gap to the relegation zone, so we can be pleased.

Daniel Caligiuri: We had a good first half. We took to the pitch with confidence and it was nice to take a rare, early 2-0 lead. We knew that Hoffenheim would offer space in behind and we used it well. It was a nervy finish though, which is unfortunate given that we could have been 3-0 up at the break.

Heiko Herrlich: I think our first-half performance was very good. We started well, got stuck into the challenges and forced a number of turnovers. We scored two very good goals like that. We controlled the game and even had the chance to make it 3-0. We had to make two changes at the break. Ruben Vargas was knackered, he had stomach flu on Monday, while Raphael Vargas took a knock. In the second half, we gave the ball away too often. We will work on that, but also focus on the good moments in the first half. It was nervy at the end, but overall it was a deserved win.

Sebastian Hoeneß: Congratulations to Augsburg for the ween. We obviously had planned for a different start. We knew it would be difficult if we went behind. The goals we conceded made things even more frustrating. We had to deal with that, we were too calm. After that, I can have no complaints with my team; we played well. After the break, we took the game into their half, but we weren’t clinical enough.
