After their 2-1 loss against RB Leipzig, FC Augsburg finish the season in 15th place. “I’m happy we put in a good performance today,” said Heiko Herrlich, who was pleased with his side’s gutsy performance as despite the loss. Read the full post-match reactions below.
Rani Khedira: “We’ve played against a very good Leipzig side, who rightly play in the Champions League. For us, it was a season of ups and downs, at the end of which we achieved our minimum expectation for the season. Of course, we would have liked to climb a couple more places in the table. I have great confidence in our managerial team, that they will strengthen our team with quality players and leaders.”
Philipp Max: "We were a different team compared to the end of last season. We held ourselves well against a strong Leipzig team, we defended with passion and created chances for ourselves. We got off lightly finishing 15th in the table and especially picking up only 13 points in the second half of the season isn't what we wanted. We want to improve on that next season."
Alfred Finnbogason: "Today was a real fight. We did really well especially in the second half. Our final pass often didn't come off and Leipzig won it at the end. We had hoped to climb up the table with a win today, but it wasn't to be. It was a mediocre season, but we still had some highlights like the draw against Bayern or the run of wins in December. We will go again next season. We're hungrier than ever before."
Ruben Vargas: "We wanted to win today, but we knew that Leipzig are a top-class team. Unfortunately, our performance wasn't enough for any points. I'm still pleased about my goal though. Philipp and I were unsure about who was going to take the free kick, then the ball came to me off the wall so I just hit it. This season has been a dream come true for me and I think I can be happy with my performances."
Heiko Herrlich: "I'm happy that we put in a good performance today. We would've to take something more. Leipzig had some good chances at the start and could've taken the lead then. But how we conceded is annoying, because we should've defended it better. We tried to be brave going forward and had some good chances. Our equaliser made it exciting. With a bit of luck, we'd have taken a point. But it was a decent performance. We fought to the end."
Julian Nagelsmann: "We played well and were active. We missed out on a goal at the start. Overall, we had some good chances, and then we scored. After the equaliser, it looked a bit like recent weeks. But then we recovered. It's a deserved win and an important third-placed finish."
