Herrlich: “The first goal was a frustrating one to concede”

Reaction to the Wolfsburg defeat

FCA slipped to a 2-0 defeat against VfL Wolfsburg. “To be honest, we were lucky not to concede more goals in the second half,” stated head coach Heiko Herrlich. Here are the post-match reactions after the loss to the Wolves.

Daniel Caligiuri: “We started the game really well and had chances. We’re often accused of not creating any, but this time we just didn’t take them. Unfortunately, Wolfsburg went ahead with what was their first proper opportunity. Ultimately, Wolfsburg deserved their win in the end though.”

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We know that we’ve got a tough schedule at the moment, but we’ve already proven that we can take points against teams like these. We unfortunately didn’t manage that today, although we were really in the game in the first half. We created some chances through good football. Conceding after the first real loss of possession was really disappointing. The final scoreline could have been higher as they had two goals chalked off for offside. We will keep our heads up, because every game gives us a new chance to pick up points.”

Florian Niederlechner: "Wolfsburg are in really good form, which you could see today. They went ahead with their first chance and didn’t allow us many opportunities after that. We were actually playing well prior to that, though, and could have taken the lead ourselves with the chances we had, which we didn’t take. We all know that the games aren’t going to get any easier. We need to get it together and fight hard for a win together. If we do that, I believe we will get one.”

André Hahn: “We knew before the game that Wolfsburg are playing well at the moment. We did well in the first half and created a few chances. Conceding from a counter is really frustrating. We wanted to press them high up the pitch today and it didn’t work out as well as we had hoped.”

Heiko Herrlich: “We can’t have any complaints about the defeat, even though we played really well for the first 30 minutes. We had a few chances, which you need to take if you are going to get anything from the game. The first goal was frustrating to concede because we had created an overload when we lost the ball. Wolfsburg then scored a great goal on the break. The second goal also came from us being dispossessed, which could have been avoided. To be honest, we were lucky not to concede more goals in the second half.”

Oliver Glasner: "Overall, it was a deserved win. It was a great team performance, even if we had some problems at the start. We made too many mistakes, but then sorted things out and scored a nice goal to go ahead. We controlled the game well in the second half. I would like to pay a big compliment to my team, who just carried on playing the way they were after the disallowed goal and didn’t let it affect them.”
