FC Augsburg achieved the club’s second opening day victory since promotion to the Bundesliga ten years ago with a 3-1 win over 1. FC Union Berlin. “The team showed a lot of spirit in the match,” praised Heiko Herrlich after the victory. Read all the reaction to the result here.

André Hahn: “We’re absolutely buzzing, the season couldn’t have gotten off to a better start. We were especially good going forwards. Now we want to stay compact and carry on showing the passion that we displayed today on the pitch.”

Michael Gregoritsch: “You can see the quality that we have in the squad. We’ve probably got the best bench that FCA have had in years. We’re extremely pleased to have picked up the three points and scored three goals in the opening game. When I return, I want to show on the pitch that I am fully committed to Augsburg and if I can score goals, that’s even better.”

Rafał Gikiewicz: “It was an emotional game for me. As I was warming up, I had goosebumps when 5,000 Union fans were chanting my name. But I have started a new chapter in my career and now I’m committed to FC Augsburg. I’m delighted that we won the game by two goals. Defensively, I thought we were perfect. We were compact and didn’t allow them openings, and we scored two great headers at the other end of the pitch.”

Heiko Herrlich: “We’re very pleased to have picked up all three points. The team showed a lot of spirit in the match. It took us a long time to get into the game and really start to settle, but at the end of the first half we were in control and winning 1-0 against a well-organised Union defence. In the second half we found it a bit difficult at the beginning again. Union put us under pressure and all we were doing was defending. After they equalised, the team showed a good attitude and responded well, and we scored a great headed goal. I’m very pleased about the result.”

Urs Fischer: “The first half was very even and the first goal against us came out of nowhere. Augsburg played well, but we didn’t do enough defensively after the goal. In the second half you could see that we tried to put them under more pressure were then rewarded with the equaliser. But after that with the second and third goals, our defending was again not good enough. Augsburg took advantage of that and deserved to win.”
