Gouweleeuw: “We made too many mistakes”

Reaction on matchday 27

FC Köln leapfrogged Augsburg in the Bundesliga table with a 3-1 win on matchday 27. Here is all the reaction from the defeat:

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: "We knew that we could take a big step forward today but we weren’t switched on in the key moments and we conceded the goals far too cheaply. We managed to pull one back but we were out of position for their third. It’s the little details that decide games and we made too many mistakes.”

Ruben Vargas: “We didn’t start the game well and we made it too easy for them to score. I felt that we could get back into the game after we pulled one back but 3-1 was too much for us to overturn. It is bitter that our unbeaten run at home has ended in this way. We also didn’t create enough clear-cut chances.”

Maximilian Bauer: “We still managed to show a reaction at 2-0 but overall, we didn’t do enough to turn the game round. That feels really bitter at this moment in time and we can’t afford to give too much away in the coming games.”

Elvis Rexhbecaj: “I think we gifted them all three goals today and that can’t happen. We responded well at 2-0 down but that wasn’t enough in the second half. We lacked that cutting edge.”

Enrico Maaßen: “We were aware of the importance of this game and we could have taken a big step in the right direction. We actually looked bright in the opening stages but we made two fatal errors. That’s why we had to take a lot of risks but we deservedly made it 2-1. We often lacked that final pass and bit of conviction, otherwise we could have gone in level at the break. We then conceded far too cheaply after the break and we couldn’t quite muster enough momentum after that. It was an intense game but it’s what happens in the penalty areas that is decisive. We need to stop conceding easy goals and that’s what we’ll be working on in the week.”

Steffen Baumgart: “We are delighted that we have finally picked up three points again. In my opinion, the win wasn’t undeserved but it could have gone the other way. We played with courage at the top of the pitch and we tried to carve out chances. It was a mixture of luck and skill that some of them went in. I saw two evenly matched teams today and that’s why I am very happy that we picked up the three points.”
