Gouweleeuw: "Full concentration on Werder Bremen"

First Team 21.09.2018, 00:36
FC Augsburg welcome SV Werder Bremen to the WWK ARENA on Saturday, 22nd September (15:30 CEST). FCA will be looking to secure all three points in their second home match of the season after an unfortunate loss late on in Mainz last time out. The Red-Green-Whites suffered a painful last minute defeat in Mainz last time out having taken the lead in the 83rd minute. Two late Mainz goals were enough to snatch victory away from FCA. Saturday’s opponents Werder Bremen come into this match after similar disappointment having led Nürnberg 1-0 until the 93rd minutes. However, the hosts couldn’t see the game out and the match ended in a 1-1 stalemate. FCA coach is aware of the threats that Bremen will pose in Augsburg on Saturday: “Bremen have a very good, technically strong team. They want to contest for the European spots and they have made some good signings to help them. We will have to play more aggressively compared with our performance in Mainz if we want to come away with all three points on Saturday.” Defensive stalwart Jeffrey Gouweleeuw knows one of the Werder Bremen players very well having played against his fellow countryman on several occasions – new signing Davy Klaassen. “I know Davy from my time playing in the Netherlands. We often played against each other and I know that he is a good player. However, we shouldn’t hide away from anyone. We can score points against every opponent in the Bundesliga. It is important to be fully concentrated on the Werder game.” Daniel Baier prepares to make his 300th FCA appearance FCA captain Daniel Baier is expected to make his 300th appearance for the club on Saturday and his colleague Gouweleeuw knows just how important Baier is to the club. “Daniel is Mr Augsburg. He is our captain and a brilliant role model. The younger players at the club are especially important to him as he constantly support them in training. He exudes calmness all the time, both on and off the pitch.” Manuel Baum also is delighted for his midfield maestro: “What Daniel has achieved in the last few years has really been extraordinary – a football revolution. The game has completely changed, yet he has adapted to these changes and become a corner stone of FCA. I am particularly appreciative of the way we can communicate with each other non-verbally, this is a big help especially in training.
