Finnbogason: “I feel really good”

The season opener at Borussia Dortmund may have come too early for him, but Alfred Finnbogason has the first home game of the season against 1. FC Union Berlin this coming Saturday in his sights. The FCA striker also believes the two new additions can be of immediate help. His ordeal is slowly coming to an end. "I’ve trained properly with the team for the last three weeks," Alfred Finnbogason said on Tuesday. "The goal was always to return against Union and it’s realistic to think that I could play on Saturday." Due to a tendon injury in his calf, last season was over in April for the Iceland international – but now his return is imminent: "I hope it’s going to be worth all the time I’ve spent in rehab, but I feel really good and I hope I can show that to the fans." But Finnbogason doesn’t want to overdo it. "I only want to come back when I feel ready," he emphasised. "Only then can I perform at the level that I expect from myself. If you feel ready though, you have to make the leap at some point.” He still has things left to accomplish with FCA, which is why he recently extended his contract until 2022. "Augsburg has always supported me, even through my injuries, so I want to repay their faith," explained Finnbogason. "I'm not done here yet." On Lichtsteiner and Jedvaj: "They’ll both help us right from the off" The 30-year-old met two new teammates on Tuesday in Stephan Lichtsteiner and Tin Jedvaj. Finnbogason described the two new boys as "a couple of very good players who will really improve our squad. We can really use a guy like Stephan with all his international experience," he said. "And I’ve played against Tin plenty of times – he’s a good, aggressive defender - both of them will help us right from the off." Finnbogason and his teammates have now put the opening day loss to Borussia Dortmund behind them. "It was a tough opponent to start the season against," said the attacker. "There were a lot of positives to take out of the match; it wasn’t all bad. We hope we can show a different side to our game against Union." On Saturday (15:30 CEST), FCA welcome the Köpenicker for the first home game of the season. "Of course we had pictured kicking off the season differently," confessed Augsburg’s number 27. "But we just need a little time to grow together as a team. The best way to bounce back is by winning."
