FC Augsburg put an end to FC Bayern München’s 27-game unbeaten run in the league, running out 2-1 winners in Munich on matchday 19. New signing Arthur Chaves and Han Noah-Massengo both scored to overturn a 1-0 deficit and seal all three points for Manuel Baum’s side.

The head coach made four changes to his starting line-up following the 2-2 draw against SC Freiburg last time out. Cédric Zesiger, Elvis Rexhbecaj and Anton Kade all returned to the line-up and were joined by new signing Chaves, who had only arrived in Augsburg on Thursday. Kristijan Jakić missed the match due to a calf muscle issue, while Noahkai Banks was unavailable due to suspension (yellow-card accumulation).

FCA started brightly and looked for opportunities to attack early on. With the help of a relentless press, the visitors sought to keep Bayern from having both time and space to work their way up the pitch. At the back, Baum’s side formed a solid block, led by captain Keven Schlotterbeck. The deadlock was then broken by the hosts in the 23rd minute, as Hiroki Ito headed in a Michael Olise corner from close range.

With the lead in hand, Bayern were able to increase the pressure on their opponents, keeping Augsburg within their own half. When they were able to break free of the pressure, FCA did manage to create chances at the other end, such as when Robin Fellhauer saw his shot from a tight angle denied by the crossbar just before half time (45’+3).

Chaves and Massengo seal the win for FCA

Augsburg remained unchanged after the break and quickly managed to come to chances through Kade (59’) and Rexhbecaj (61’). The record champions saw their control over the game slip in the face of FCA’s relentless pressure against the ball. The 75th minute then saw Baum’s men get their reward, as Chaves netted a header on his FCA debut to draw level.

Just six minutes later, Massengo would turn the game on its head entirely. Dimitris Giannoulis found himself with room on the left flank and was able to drive down the line, before cutting the ball back across the face of goal, where Massengo was waiting to bundle it over the line (81’).

FCA then threw everything they had maintaining their lead in the closing stages of the match, earning a deserved 2-1 win away at the league leaders.

Next weekend, FC Augsburg will welcome St. Pauli to the WWK Arena on Saturday, 31st January (15:30 CET).
