FCA take all three points with win away at Paderborn

First Team 09.11.2019, 16:46

FC Augsburg picked up their second win of the season on Saturday afternoon against Paderborn following a wonder goal from Philipp Max.

Head coach Martin Schmidt made only one change for the away match against Paderborn, following the disappointing home collapse against Schalke 04: Raphael Framberger started at right-back. The 24-year-old homegrown talent was already in the thick of it from the start. Five minutes in, Framberger mistimed his challenge on home striker Streli Mamba, and gave away a penalty. Paderborn captain Klaus Gjasula stepped up to take the penalty, but FCA goalkeeper Tomas Koubek made a great save to his left to prevent Paderborn taking the lead early on (7’). FCA initially had some problems dealing with the home team’s aggressive style of play, and were fortunate not to concede five minutes later, when Mamba was unable to control a pass that would have put him one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Niederlechner misses two good chances

Augsburg attempted careful build-up play, but struggled to find an opening in the compact Paderborn defence. However, FCA were not deterred and in the 30th minute, Niederlechner was able to create two really good chances. First, his effort form a cross from Philipp Max was easy for home goalkeeper Leopold Zingerle to get to, but only moments later, Niederlechner leapt once more for a free header, but that effort sailed over the bar. However, shortly before half-time, Augsburg finally had a reason to celebrate. After a foul on Florian Niederlechner on the edge of the box, Philipp Max stepped up and arced a wonder strike into the top right corner from around 25 meters out, clipping the inside of the post as it went in, to give Augsburg a 1-0 lead going into the break.

After the break, Augsburg continued to be dominant offensively while keeping the number of Paderborn chances to a minimum in their own half. Augsburg continued to be industrious in the second half, and it was Ruben Vargas who had the first shot on target in the second half. However, Leopold Zingerle was able to parry over the Swiss international’s shot in the 53rd minute, and was also on hand to prevent Marco Richter from scoring seven minutes later.

FCA weather Paderborn’s storm.

20 minutes before the end of the game, Paderborn started to attack in earnest. Abdelhamid Sabiri’s free kick was saved by Koubek, before Sven Michel’s dangerous shot rattled the bar in the 71st minute. Moments earlier, Augsburg had thought they’d scored through a nice chip by Alfred Finnbogason, but the goal was ruled out for offside. FCA were soon only working in their own half to prevent and limit Paderborn attacking moves. At the end of the game, they managed to keep hold of their narrow lead and picked up their second win of the season.

With this 1-0 victory, FCA can be happy going into the international break, before they host Hertha Berlin on Sunday, 24th November  (15:30 CET).
