FCA suffer defeat in Dortmund

Leaving Dortmund empty-handed

First Team 14.03.2026, 18:17

FC Augsburg lost 2-0 to second-placed Borussia Dortmund after an intense 90 minutes. Despite a strong performance from goalkeeper Finn Dahmen, who kept Augsburg in the game for long stretches, the visitors could not avoid defeat.

After the narrow 1–2 loss to RB Leipzig, coach Manuel Baum made two changes to his starting lineup: Alexis Claude-Maurice returned to his usual position, and Cédric Zesiger came back into the starting XI after serving a suspension for yellow cards. Noahkai Banks, who was slightly injured, began the match on the bench.

Both teams started quickly, with Dortmund repeatedly getting close to Augsburg’s goal. The visitors were not intimidated by the early pressure and tried to break forward through quick counter-attacks, though clear chances were hard to come by. Soon after, Dortmund took the lead. Maximilian Beier broke through on the left side and set up Karim Adeyemi, who finished from close range to make it 1-0 to Dortmund in the 14th minute.

Baum’s side needed a few minutes to recover from the setback but then responded impressively. First, Rodrigo Ribeiro missed a big chance to equalise after a long clearance from Dahmen (23’). Shortly afterward, another of his attempts was ruled offside (25’). Augsburg grew bolder and tried to get at Dortmund’s flanks with through balls, but the home side were still dangerous in attack. Beier and Adeyemi both came close to scoring again, and later Adeyemi hit the woodwork with a long-range effort (34’). Augsburg went into halftime trailing by a goal.

Dortmund seal the win in intense second half

Both teams returned from the break unchanged, but the start of the second half clearly belonged to the hosts. Dortmund quickly took control of the game, while Augsburg were mainly occupied with defending and repelling waves of attacks.

In the 60th minute, Dortmund scored their second goal. A Julian Ryerson corner found the head of youngster Luca Reggiani, who rose highest and scored his first Bundesliga goal. Baum reacted with a double substitution, bringing on Anton Kade and Elvis Rexhbecaj for Claude-Maurice and Han-Noah Massengo to add fresh legs in midfield. With their lead secured, Dortmund controlled possession, while Augsburg looked for chances on the counter-attack.

In the closing stages, Augsburg pushed forward again. A nice move down the right side put Robin Fellhauer in a good position, but he fired his effort just wide (82’). Dahmen then prevented a third goal with two strong one-on-one saves against Adeyemi (83’) and Serhou Guirassy (90+3’).

Augsburg will have a chance to get back to winning ways next week in front of their home crowd. On Sunday, 22nd March, they will host VfB Stuttgart at the WWK Arena (19:30 CET).
