FC Augsburg began their preparations for the 2021/22 season on Thursday on the training pitches next to the WWK Arena. After lactate and fitness tests at the start of the week, head coach Markus Weinzierl led his first training session of pre-season today.

“It’s great to finally be back with a ball at my feet” said Florian Niederlechner after a relaxing holiday, even though he knows pre-season will be an intense and “hard” time. “We want to lay the foundations for a successful season,” said the striker.

Academy players Franjo Ivanovic, Aron Zehnter, Felix Schäfer and Dzenan Pejcinovic were given the chance to train with the first team to impress Markus Weinzierl. New signing Lasse Günther was also in FCA colours for the first time, although he only worked individually due to an injury suffered last season. The same thing applied to left-back Iago, Mads Pedersen, Tim Civeja and Noah Sarenren Bazee. Felix Uduokhai, on the other hand, was back in team training for the first time since his ankle injury at the back end of 2020/21.

Weinzierl was without Ruben Vargas, Fredrik Jensen, Tomas Koubek and Michael Gregoritsch due to their participation in EURO 2020, plus Carlos Gruezo and Sergio Cordova, who are in action still at Copa America. Meanwhile, Maurice Malone, Kevin Danso, Jozo Stanic, Frederik Winther and Felix Götze, who were away on loan last season, are back in Augsburg with the team.

“There’s a really good mood on the training ground. You can see the lads are really excited for the new season,” commented the coach after the first training session.
