After the departure of Enrico Maaßen, FCA have now made a decision about his successor as head coach. FCA have managed to secure the services of a head coach with international experience in the shape of Dane Jess Thorup, who fits perfectly with FCA’s vision for the future. The 52-year-old, who has already worked successfully at FC Midtjylland, KAA Gent, FC Copenhagen as well as the Denmark U20 and U21 national teams, has signed a contract with FCA until 30th June 2025.

12 years as a head coach at the highest level

“We are pleased that in Jess we have managed to sign a top coach and football man for FCA, who has already worked as a head coach at the highest level and has gained a lot of experience on both a national and international level. Jess has proven at his previous clubs that he can both develop players as well as lead teams to success,” said FCA sporting director Marinko Jurendic of Jess Thorup, who has previously led both both FC Midtjylland and FC Copenhagen to the league title in Denmark. He has also won the Danish Cup with Esbjerg fB and was then voted coach of the year in Denmark in 2013.

Solid negotiations with first-choice candidate Jess Thorup

“We are really pleased that Jess Thorup sees his future here at FCA. We are convinced that in him we have found an experienced and renowned head coach, who can stabilise the team in the short term and is someone who we will be successful together with. We quickly noticed in conversations with him that Jess is very well informed and couldn’t wait to get to work in Augsburg and in the Bundesliga,” said FCA managing director Michael Ströll.

Jess Thorup is looking forward to working at FCA and in the Bundesliga

“I had very constructive and goal-oriented conversations with those at the club and I immediately felt that FCA was the right next step for me. The club and the team have a lot of potential and it’s really a pleasure for me to work in the Bundesliga and for us together to bring FC Augsburg forward,” said Jess Thorup, who has already worked in German-speaking countries as a player, both at KFC Uerdingen in Germany, as well as at FC Tirol in Austria.
