FCA say goodbye to four players and an assistant coach
Ahead of the clash with Union
Before kick-off on the final matchday of the season on Saturday, 17th May (15:30 CEST), FC Augsburg will say goodbye to assistant coach Lars Knudsen as well as four players, including Fredrik Jensen and Raphael Framberger.
Jensen departs after seven years
Fredrik Jensen’s time at FC Augsburg will come to an end with the match at home to 1. FC Union Berlin. The 27-year-old made the move to Augsburg from FC Twente in 2018, racking up 102 Bundesliga appearances during the seven years since, while also featuring in the DFB-Pokal on eight occasions. The Finland international scored nine times for the club.
Framberger stays on at FCA
Raphael Framberger first wore the colours of FC Augsburg when he was just eight years old. Born in the city, he played for the club at every youth level before making his debut for the U23s during the 2014/15 season. In January 2017, he fulfilled his dream of playing in the Bundesliga, handed his first appearance against VfL Wolfsburg. The 29-year-old has now been forced to end his playing career due to injury after making 84 Bundesliga appearances and playing five times in the DFB-Pokal. Nevertheless, Framberger will remain at FCA as he undertakes a training course, where he will get a taste for the work done in every club department.
Onyeka set to return to England
Frank Onyeka’s loan will expire at the end of the season. The Nigeria international arrived at Augsburg from Brentford last summer and quickly became a staple in head coach Jess Thorup’s central midfield. Onyeka started 32 of the 33 games he featured in for FCA, providing two assists along the way.
Oxford’s contract to expire in the summer
Reece Oxford’s contract will also come to an end in the summer. The lofty centre-back made the move to Augsburg from West Ham in January 2019, initially on loan, before the transfer was later made permanent. Oxford played 77 times for FCA in the Bundesliga, as well as thrice in the DFB-Pokal. His last competitive appearance for the first team came back on 12th November 2022 against VfL Bochum. FC Augsburg wishes the 26-year-old all the best with his health going forward.
Knudsen to take charge of the Denmark U21s
There will also be a departure in the coaching department as Lars Knudsen leaves FCA after nearly one-and-a-half years. The Dane was initially brought in as a set-piece coach in January 2024 before later taking up the role of assistant to Jess Thorup. He now returns to his home country where he will take over the reins of Denmark’s U21 national team.
Thank you and all the best for the future!
