Seven players named in national squads ahead of U21 European Championship and Euros qualifiers
The Bundesliga may be finished for the season, but there are still several international matches on the agenda during the summer break. Seven FCA players will be hoping to make an appearance for their national sides.
The U21 European Championship, which will be held in Romania and Georgia from 21st June to 8th July, is eagerly awaited. As defending champions, the Germany U21s are once again among the favourites, and they will face Israel, the Czech Republic and England in Group C. The provisional 26-man squad includes FCA defender Maximilian Bauer, who will travel with the team to the training camp in South Tyrol on Saturday. The final 23-man European Championship squad will be announced on Wednesday 14th June.
Arne Engels, David Čolina and Dion Beljo were also named in the provisional squads for their respective national teams ahead of the U21 Euros. While Engels and the Belgium U21s will face Portugal, Georgia and the Netherlands, the Croatia side, including Čolina and Beljo, are in Group B. Their opponents are Spain, Romania and Ukraine. Beljo is currently training with the Croatia senior team, before joining the youth side for the U21 European Championship.
As a reward for his strong performances in the final period of the season, Tomáš Koubek can also celebrate his call-up. The 30-year-old goalkeeper will first play a European Championship qualifier with the Czech Republic against the Faroe Islands (Saturday 19th June, 20:45 CEST), followed three days later by a friendly against Montenegro (Tuesday 20th June, 20:45 CEST).
Ruben Vargas and Ermedin Demirović have also been named in the squads for their national sides’ qualifiers. Vargas and the Switzerland team will face Andorra (Friday 16th June, 20:45 CEST) and Romania (Monday 19th June, 20:45 CEST), while Demirović and Bosnia-Herzegovina will come up against Portugal (Saturday 17th June, 20:45 CEST) and Luxembourg (Tuesday 20th June, 20:45 CEST).
