FC Augsburg slipped to a 2-1 defeat away to 1. FC Heidenheim on Saturday afternoon, with Phillip Tietz’s late goal coming too late to spark a comeback.
On matchday 5, FCA were without captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, who suffered a medial ligament tear in the 4-1 defeat to Mainz. Kristijan Jakić wore the armband in his absence, while Samuel Essende, Robin Fellhauer and Keven Schlotterbeck came into the starting line-up.
Against a Heidenheim side who had yet to pick up a point – though they had only narrowly lost to Wolfsburg, Leipzig, Dortmund and Hamburg – it was a tough contest as expected. The opening stages were marked by plenty of challenges and stoppages. Augsburg looked most dangerous from set pieces, while Heidenheim threatened through Arijon Ibrahimović (16’) and Sirlord Conteh (28’).
The same pattern continued until the break, with FCA’s defence working hard and Heidenheim always dangerous on the counter. Just before half-time, Samuel Essende broke free, but after a tussle with Jonas Föhrenbach the referee waved play on and didn’t award a penalty. Moments later the whistle blew for the interval.
Heidenheim strike twice – Tietz pulls one back late
The second half got off to the worst possible start for Augsburg. Just two minutes after the restart, Kaufmann reacted quickest to a cross from the right and finished into the far corner for 1-0 (47’). Seven minutes later the hosts doubled their lead. Kaufmann again made the difference, cutting the ball back for Conteh to blast into the roof of the net (54’).
Wagner’s side pushed for a response. Fabian Rieder first fired wide from a tight angle on his weaker right foot (58’), before drawing a fine save from Ramaj with a dipping effort two minutes later. By then Wagner had already made three changes, bringing on Noahkai Banks, Mert Kömür and Dimitris Giannoulis, who was making his return from a muscle injury.
The introduction of Phillip Tietz added further attacking impetus, but FCA struggled to break down Heidenheim’s compact back line. Deep into stoppage time, Tietz finally pulled one back to make it 2-1 (90+8’). However, Augsburg were unable to create another chance, and the closing stages – overshadowed by a medical emergency in the home end – brought no further change to the scoreline.
Next up, Augsburg host VfL Wolfsburg at the WWK ARENA on Saturday, 4th October (15:30 CEST).
