Two sessions again on Tuesday in Malta

FC Augsburg are getting ready for the second half of the Bundesliga season in a winter training camp based in Malta. Their first game will be against Borussia Dortmund in a sold-out WWK Arena on Saturday, 18th January (15:30 CET).

FCA coach Martin Schmidt led two training sessions on Tuesday, just as he had done on Monday. Both took place on the training pitch at Malta’s national stadium. Focus was on passing and tactics, although some athletics work was also done.

Youngster Simon Asta couldn’t take part after he tore his ACL on the first day and has already travelled back to Germany for treatment in the Hessingpark clinic.

Maurice Malone and Reece Oxford are also both absent from the trip to Malta due to viral infections. Their conditions haven’t improved enough to start training, meaning they will not travel out to meet the rest of the squad at a later date either.

New signing Eduard Löwen joins the team

FCA’s new recruit Eduard Löwen met up with his new teammates for the first time on Tuesday afternoon, having signed on loan from Hertha until June 2021 (including an option to buy). He wasn’t able to join his new colleagues on the training pitch, but was part of the team meeting and enjoyed dinner in the evening with the players. “I’m happy that this move has finally happened at the second attempt and I’m glad to be here in Malta now,” said Löwen after arriving to the hotel. “I had already started training with Hertha a few days ago, so I feel ready to start working with my new side now.”

The last few days have been rather tiresome for Löwen, however. The midfielder had to fly back from Florida to Germany as he left Hertha’s training camp to complete a medical with Augsburg. He then carried on his busy week with a flight to Malta.
