Sixth pre-season friendly ends in a stalemate
FC Augsburg came from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw against newly promoted Serie A side Pisa Sporting Club in their penultimate friendly of the summer. Played behind closed doors at the Paul Renz Academy, FCA’s goals both came from Steve Mounié.
Wearing their new “Roman kit” for the first time, Augsburg took control from the outset and pressed the visitors high. Clear-cut chances, however, were hard to come by in the opening stages. Pisa stayed compact and looked to break quickly, targeting FCA’s right-hand side in particular.
The first real opening for Augsburg arrived in the 34th minute when Kyliane Dong’s shot from a tight angle was kept out by alert Pisa keeper Simone Scuffet. Just before the break, FCA were dealt a setback. Referee Felix Wagner pointed to the spot after a challenge between Aiman Dardari and Samuele Angori – a contentious decision, as Dardari appeared to get a touch on the ball. Matteo Tramoni converted to make it 1-0 to the visitors (41').
Wagner made two changes at the break, while Pisa boss Alberto Gilardino brought on five new players. The visitors started the half brighter and doubled their lead in the 68th minute when Tramoni latched onto a pass from Højholt to make it 2-0. FCA’s response was immediate. First, Samuel Essende was denied from close range by Scuffet (72'), but moments later Mounié was on hand to turn in the rebound from an Arne Maier corner to halve the deficit.
The equaliser came in the 84th minute – Dong delivered a pinpoint cross from the right, and Mounié headed into the far corner for his second of the game. Just after the second goal, Cédric Zesiger was shown a second yellow card, adding extra edge to the closing stages. A flurry of fouls and stoppages disrupted the flow, and the game finished 2-2.
FCA’s final pre-season friendly is on Saturday, 9th August (15:00 CEST) at home to AFC Sunderland in the WWK ARENA. The DFB-Pokal first-round tie away at Hallescher FC follows on Sunday, 17th August (18:00 CEST).
