FCA fall to 2-1 defeat in first friendly against Rot-Weiss Essen

FC Augsburg played their fourth pre-season friendly on the eve of their departure to Kollerschlag, Austria, for training camp. FCA faced Rot-Weiss Essen in a friendly double-header, suffering their first defeat of pre-season in the process.

It was also Essen’s first pre-season friendly before the Regionalliga gets back underway. The visitors started strongly, with the referee awarding them a penalty in the fourth minute of play. Fortunately for FCA, Essen were unable to make the most of the opportunity, with the penalty being denied by the crossbar. 

Augsburg were able to mount attacks of their own, but struggled to find the back of the net. Essen then took the lead through Ramien Safi in the 25th minute, as he slotted home past Finn Dahmen.  

Just ten minutes later, Safi once again took advantage of a loss of possession in front of goal and netted his second of the afternoon. FCA headed into the half-time break trailing 2-0.

Schlotterbeck cuts the deficit

Head coach Sandro Wagner’s side started well into the second half. Steve Mounié’s shot was initially parried by the RWE goalkeeper, before Mads Pedersen was able to net the rebound. However, the goal wouldn’t count, as the linesman’s flag was up. FCA managed to finally cut the deficit in the 70th minute, as Keven Schlotterbeck headed in following a corner.

Shortly before the final whistle, Kyliane Dong was brought down on the edge of the area. The referee showed Jannik Hofmann his second yellow of the match, with Essen reduced to ten for the final minutes. FCA continued to press hard, but were unable to find an equaliser. 

Essen were able to hold onto their lead, handing FCA their first defeat of pre-season. The two teams will meet again in a second friendly later this evening (17:00 CEST).
