FCA extend Jeffrey Gouweleeuw’s contract
Until 2027
FC Augsburg captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw has committed his future to the club. The club have extended the 34-year-old Dutchman’s contract by a further year, keeping him at FCA until 30th June 2027. Gouweleeuw is currently working towards his comeback after a medial ligament injury.
Gouweleeuw joined FC Augsburg from AZ Alkmaar in January 2016 and has since made 278 competitive appearances (7 goals) for the Fuggerstädter. Those outings consist of 263 Bundesliga matches and 15 DFB-Pokal games. The centre-back is now just 12 Bundesliga appearances short of becoming FC Augsburg’s all-time record Bundesliga appearance maker.
“Jeff has been at FC Augsburg for more than 10 years now. Throughout that time, he has always taken responsibility and led by example. We’re delighted that Jeff will be heading into his 12th season with the club. We’ve also already spoken about a possible role for him at the club once his playing career comes to an end, and over the coming months we’ll discuss the period after his active career in more concrete terms,” said CEO Michael Ströll.
Sporting director Benni Weber added: “With his experience, Jeff is a key part of our team – not just on the pitch, but in the dressing room as well. We’re supporting him on his way back from injury and are looking forward to seeing him return to full fitness.”
“FC Augsburg is my club – this is where I feel at home. That’s why I’m really happy to be staying on. After my injury, I’m taking things step by step so I can get back out on the pitch soon and help the team again. The chance to potentially become FCA’s record Bundesliga appearance maker is an extra source of motivation for me,” explained Jeffrey Gouweleeuw.
