FCA draw 1-1 with Besiktas in second pre-season friendly

FC Augsburg marked the start of their training camp in Kufstein with a friendly against Besiktas on Saturday afternoon. The sides played out a 1-1 draw in 30-degree temperatures, although the match only lasted 76 minutes.

Enrico Maaßen named 25 players in his squad for the second friendly of pre-season. The first test of the new campaign saw FCA claim a 6-0 win over Türkspor Augsburg.

The Függerstädter, who will head to Schladming later today to begin their one-week training camp, started the match on the front foot. Ruben Vargas and Dion Beljo, who were away with their respective nations at the start of the summer break, both tried their luck from distance (6’, 21’) but weren’t able to bet the goalkeeper. Besiktas came close to the opener with a shot against the crossbar of Finn Dahmen’s goal, before Jackson Muleka’s header from a corner made it 1-0 to the Istanbul side in the 41st minute.

Maaßen brought on eleven sets of fresh legs at the interval, including Phillip Tietz, who only signed for the club on Wednesday. Despite the heat, FCA pushed for an equaliser and got their reward shortly before the hour mark. A corner-kick from Arne Engels was met by the head of Irvin Cardona, who sent the ball into the back of the net (58‘). As the game was building to an exciting conclusion, Besiktas fans threw fireworks onto the pitch as they had already done once earlier in the match. This time, the referee decided to abandon the game in the 76th minute.
