FCA celebrate 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt

Unbeaten streak continues

First Team 03.12.2023, 21:48

The undefeated run continues! FC Augsburg recorded a 2-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday evening to extend their unbeaten run to six straight games.

Head coach Jess Thorup made two changes to his starting line-up following last weekend’s 1-1 draw in Berlin, bringing in Fredrik Jensen and Kevin Mbabu. Robert Gumny and Irvin Cardona were left out of the matchday squad due to illness.

After heavy snowfall blanketed parts of Bavaria in recent days, there were doubts about whether or not the match would be able to take place. With the help of fans, staff and various contractors, the WWK ARENA was able to cleared of snow in time for kick off. A total of 26,107 spectators were in attendance on a cold and wintery Sunday night, as the match got off to an evenly-matched start.

The first goal of the night was scored by the hosts, as Felix Uduokhai scored following a free kick from midfield. However, it was then disallowed due to Jeffrey Gouweleeuw being in an offside position (28’). Seven minutes later, FCA would find the back of the net again, as Ermedin Demirović won the ball and found Jensen. The latter coolly slotted home the opener, netting his first goal of the season in the process (35’).

Iago doubles the lead, Demirović has a penalty saved

The hosts headed into the break narrowly ahead. As the second half got underway, FCA remained in control and were rewarded with their second goal of the night in the 58th minute. Iago got on the end of a cross from the right wing and was able to sensationally place the ball into the top corner with his right foot. Ruben Vargas was then brought down in the box by Willian Pacho, as captain Demirović stepped up to take the penalty. However, Eintracht goalkeeper Kevin Trapp was able to save his attempt (76’).

The final minutes of the match were tense, after the Eagles managed to get one back. Goalkeeper Finn Dahmen was unlucky to redirect a ball from former FCA man Phillip Max into his own goal (78’). The final chance of the night belonged to SGE’s Jessic Ngankam, but his shot missed the target (90’+6). The hosts were able to see the result through and pick up their fourth victory of the season.

With the win, FCA currently sit in ninth place with 17 points and can head into next weekend’s clash with Werder Bremen feeling confident (Saturday, 9th December, 15:30 CET).
