An afternoon to forget for FC Augsburg, who were well beaten 6-0 by RB Leipzig on matchday 8 of the Bundesliga.
Head coach Sandro Wagner made one change to the side that drew 1-1 in Cologne, with Alexis Claude-Maurice coming into the starting XI for Mert Kömür (ill). Elvis Rexhbecaj also returned to the matchday squad after recovering from back problems.
Both sides began on the front foot in blustery conditions. The hosts made a bright start and had the first chance in the eighth minute when Kristijan Jakić fired over from distance. After that, however, the visitors took control.
Yan Diomande opened the scoring for Leipzig on ten minutes, drilling a low shot into the near corner. Goals from Rômulo (18’) and Antonio Nusa (22’) quickly followed to make it 3-0. Leipzig then eased off slightly, while FCA struggled to create clear chances. Claude-Maurice tried his luck from range (37’), but his effort missed the target. Just before the break, Christoph Baumgartner finished off a quick move to add a fourth (38’). Augsburg could have pulled one back before half time, yet Claude-Maurice’s close-range effort was kept out by Peter Gulácsi (45’).
No way through for FCA
Both sides returned unchanged after the break, with FCA continuing to press high and Leipzig looking to counter. Augsburg made a more purposeful start to the half, as Robin Fellhauer saw his shot blocked (47’), before the Leipzig goalkeeper turned away another long-range effort from the midfielder (53’).
The visitors soon reasserted themselves, however. Assan Ouédraogo found space on the edge of the box and fired home to make it 5-0 (56’). Wagner responded with a triple substitution, bringing on Ismaël Gharbi, Phillip Tietz and Rexhbecaj, but the changes couldn’t alter the course of the game. Castello Lukeba then added Leipzig’s sixth – and final – goal of the afternoon in front of 28,600 fans at the WWK ARENA.
FCA will now look to move on quickly, with another home game coming up on Tuesday evening (20:45 CET) against second-division side VfL Bochum in the second round of the DFB-Pokal.
