Dahmen: “We could have got something from that game”
Match reaction following the defeat in Mainz
FC Augsburg went home empty-handed after they were beaten by Mainz in their matchday 21 clash. Read on for the post-match reaction.
Elvis Rexhbecaj: “We had good chances but, particularly in the second half, that was a scrappy encounter. It’s very disappointing to have conceded two penalties. I told the referee straight away that I had only brushed against the player slightly, if at all. We know the situation we’re in. Just because we won two games in a row doesn’t mean everything is going perfectly. We have to keep working and stay fully focused.”
Finn Dahmen: “That match didn’t go at all how we wanted. We could have got something from that game, but Mainz won the decisive battles and converted the two penalties. It’s just very disappointing to have conceded two penalties. Things like that can decide the game. Now, we have a very important match coming up against Heidenheim. We’ve been on an upward trajectory in the last few weeks, and now we’ve suffered a small setback. We have to deal with that and put in an improved performance against Heidenheim.”
Keven Schlotterbeck: “Mainz were slightly more aggressive and deserved to win in the end. Obviously, though, the penalty decision in the first half had an impact on the result. I’m tired of these discussions. We talk about the same things week after week. We wanted to win this match today and are obviously gutted to be going home empty-handed. We want to get points on the board again with our fans behind us against Heidenheim.”
Manuel Baum (FC Augsburg head coach): “We wanted to play on the front foot, but our game plan went out of the window in the first ten minutes. The penalty situation was decisive for the outcome of the match. I spoke to the fourth official as soon as the decision was made. VAR tried to find the contact but couldn’t, even after a long check. I can’t understand why the referee didn’t go and review the incident himself. Regardless, we’re also disappointed that we couldn’t get an equaliser. Then, the second penalty made it game over.”
Urs Fischer (1. FSV Mainz 05 head coach): “That was the tough game we expected. It was an even first half, but the momentum was on our side after the penalty. However, we were unable to control the game, and we had clear discussions about that at half time. The momentum was also on our side in the second half. Our goalkeeper kept the lead intact before we got the second penalty. We could even have made it 3-0 in the last few minutes.”
