Dahmen: “A fascinating and valuable experience”
FC Augsburg’s keeper on his first call-up with the Germany national team

This month’s international break saw Finn Dahmen receive a call-up to the Germany senior team for the first time in his career. FC Augsburg’s shot-stopper takes a look back over the exciting couple of weeks he spent with the team.
“It was such a fascinating and valuable experience. It was all really new to me,” said Dahmen. More than anything, he was struck by the quality on display in team training sessions: “Everything is just that bit quicker, more clinical and more intense. Although, I did find that I’m capable of keeping up in that kind of environment.” Even though he had, by his own admission, “of course imagined something different” when it came to Germany’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying loss to Slovakia, the 27-year-old took away a lot of positive lessons from his time with the national team: “I’ve learnt that it’s no good hiding myself away. The whole experience has given me a lot of confidence for the next few weeks back at the club.”
After the defeat in the opening qualifying fixture, the attitude amongst the players was anything but deflated, as the positive reaction in the form of a 3-1 win over Northern Ireland clearly showed. Dahmen didn’t feature on the pitch in either game, as Oliver Baumann started both fixtures between the sticks for Germany. “What matters now is continuing to give the best possible performance every week for my club, in order to show everyone what I’m capable of. I’d love to keep my place in the national team in the future.”
When looking ahead to FCA’s upcoming Bundesliga game away at FC St. Pauli, Dahmen is steadfastly optimistic: “We are very confident that we can secure three points there. In comparison to last year, our squad has become stronger and stronger – although we’re very aware that we have to prove this on the pitch.”
