Baum: “We want to stay ambitious”
FCA host Frankfurt
FC Augsburg are at home to Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday (15:30 CEST). On matchday 31 of the Bundesliga season, a sold-out WWK ARENA welcomes one of Augsburg’s direct rivals in the table.
With four games left to play, Frankfurt sit eighth on 42 points, while FCA are ninth with 36. A home win would cut the gap to the visitors to three points and also mathematically secure Bundesliga survival.
FCA head coach Manuel Baum gave a clear assessment of the situation: “It’s like a 100-metre sprint – we’re two metres from the finish line, but we haven’t crossed it yet.” But Augsburg’s focus stretches beyond that first objective. “That’s our first step, and after that we’ll look at what else we can still achieve. We want to stay ambitious,” Baum stressed.
Augsburg have prepared intensively for their next opponents during training this week. “We know what they will try to do,” explained the FCA coach. In particular, he sees Frankfurt’s aggressive man-to-man approach as a major challenge for his side.
Confidence boost from the win in Leverkusen
FCA head into the game on the back of a 2-1 away win in Leverkusen, while Frankfurt were beaten 3-1 by Leipzig last time out. The reverse fixture ended in a narrow 1-0 win for Eintracht.
The squad situation also looks positive. Ahead of their penultimate home game of the season, Augsburg have a full squad available. Chrislain Matsima, who recently got some minutes with the U23s, is also back in contention.
Before kick-off, there will be a minute’s silence in memory of Alexander Manninger, who passed away suddenly last week at the age of 48. FCA will also once again wear black armbands.
