Baum: “We simply couldn’t get a grasp on the match”

First Team 07.04.2019, 19:55
FC Augsburg had an afternoon to forget at home against TSG Hoffenheim on Sunday. FCA fell to a 4-0 home defeat to end a disappointing week on a low. Here is the post match reaction. Alfred Finnbogason: “Today wasn’t a good day, especially if you look at the manner in which we lost. When a match ends 4-0, it is clear the opposing team were the much better side. We only managed to create a couple of chances after half-time to get back into the match. The game was unfortunately over after Hoffenheim doubled their lead.” Daniel Baier: “Hoffenheim were the tough opponents we expected them to be. We rarely managed to make enough progress going forward to cause them any problems. We also struggled defensively. We would’ve been able to create a few more chances to score but we didn’t find any end product to each of our attacks. A defeat today was deserved. However, we cannot allow ourselves to concede a third and a fourth goal as we did today.” Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We were simply unable to cause Hoffenheim any problems today. We tried to cause them problems in the first half with various formations. However, this proved to no avail. It didn’t work and we didn’t defend compact enough. We made life too easy for Hoffenheim. They covered the space on the pitch every well and were always a fraction quicker than us.” Gregor Kobel: “You could see we were still tired from our efforts over 120 minutes against RB Leipzig. We were feeling the effects of that match in our legs. We were not as energetic as Hoffenheim today. The result is very annoying as we were unable to provide any resolute resistance. We’ve played better on other occasions this season. I also had the feeling in the first half that Hoffenheim had a couple of defensively problems. Yet we were simply unable to take our chances in the final third.” Michael Gregoritsch: “We made too many technical mistakes today. The 120 minutes and valiant effort against Leipzig on Tuesday certainly played their part today. However, we certainly didn’t approach our tackles in the right way today. We have to accept the heavy 4-0 defeat and clear out heads for next week’s match in Frankfurt.” Manuel Baum: “No matter what we tried, we simply couldn’t get a grasp on the match. It was a poor performance in which you could tell we were still tired from the DFB-Pokal effort in mid-week. After half-time, we created two chances to equalise and came up short on both occasions. However, we deserved to lose today as Hoffenheim made the most of our mistakes.” TSG Hoffenheim head coach Julian Nagelsmann: “I’m thrilled with the entire team’s performance today. After we took the lead, Augsburg chose to change formation. We had to adapt to this alteration but did this very and coped with any threats. We were courageous and it is a fine victory. We also played very well on the counter attack in the second half and scored some deserved goals to build upon our lead.”
